About the series

"Morning Brew" is part of "Melange", an ongoing still life series inspired by the artist’s love of coffee and all the moments that gather around it.

Coming from a Greek/Austrian specifically Viennese household coffee was a certain constant in my life. First thing in the morning. Again in the afternoon. Usually with something small to eat. A biscuit, a slice of cake, whatever happened to be around.

People stopped what they were doing. You sat down. You took a break. You talked. Or not. Coffee marked the beginning of things, but it also created these pauses where time slowed down a little and everyone came together, even briefly. It wasn’t necessarily ceremonial, it was just part of life.

Now, coffee still carries all of that for me, but it has taken on new meanings too. It means I’m about to start something, or I’m avoiding starting something, or I’m taking a break from something I’ve already started. It’s there when I’m working on a painting. When I’m stuck and don’t know what to do next. When I’m talking ideas through with friends, sitting around a table covered in cups and notebooks. When I’m alone and just need to sit down for a minute and reset. In any case that small cup of bean water always means joy. Even during the most hectic day.

A cup of coffee can mean productivity or complete avoidance of productivity. Sometimes it’s comforting. Sometimes it's connection. Sometimes it’s just habit.
It can belong to long conversations, drifting thoughts, pausing, nervous energy, comfort, habit. Its meaning changes constantly, which I find strangely fascinating.
