2024, Part of the series “Melange”
Acrylic on Cotton Canvas
"Midnight Blend” has a very special place in my heart.
It was born out of late nights with my mum and sister and friends.
Nights where there was cake for absolutely no reason, long conversations that stretched far past reasonable hours, and no one feeling the need to go to bed. Conversations drifting from silly to serious and back again. Stories we’ve told a hundred times. Confessions we've never dared to say out loud. There was laughter, sometimes tears.
Sitting around the table, sometimes friends, sometimes family, sometimes both.
Mothers. Daughters. Grandmothers. Granddaughters. Sisters. Cousins. Aunts. Friends.
Funny. Loud. Happy. Tired. Sad. Serious. Equal. Honest.
All in the same room. Talking over each other. Interrupting. Finishing each other’s sentences. Laughing too loudly. Someone always reaching across the table for one more bite. Someone refilling glasses without asking. Someone saying, “wait, listen,” and then forgetting what they were about to say because everyone else is already speaking again.
The world outside could have been loud, complicated, overwhelming.
But inside that room there was a table, a drink, crumbs on plates, and the comfort of knowing: I’ve got my girls.
There is always a table. Always coffee. Something to hold while you talk. Something to refill so the night doesn’t end too quickly. Something warm or strong in your hands while time stretches just a little longer.

About the series
"Midnight Blend" is part of "Melange", an ongoing still life series inspired by the artist’s love of coffee and all the moments that gather around it.
Coming from a Greek/Austrian specifically Viennese household coffee was a certain constant in my life. First thing in the morning. Again in the afternoon. Usually with something small to eat. A biscuit, a slice of cake, whatever happened to be around.
People stopped what they were doing. You sat down. You took a break. You talked. Or not. Coffee marked the beginning of things, but it also created these pauses where time slowed down a little and everyone came together, even briefly. It wasn’t necessarily ceremonial, it was just part of life.
Now, coffee still carries all of that for me, but it has taken on new meanings too. It means I’m about to start something, or I’m avoiding starting something, or I’m taking a break from something I’ve already started. It’s there when I’m working on a painting. When I’m stuck and don’t know what to do next. When I’m talking ideas through with friends, sitting around a table covered in cups and notebooks. When I’m alone and just need to sit down for a minute and reset. In any case that small cup of bean water always means joy. Even during the most hectic day.
A cup of coffee can mean productivity or complete avoidance of productivity. Sometimes it’s comforting. Sometimes it's connection. Sometimes it’s just habit.
It can belong to long conversations, drifting thoughts, pausing, nervous energy, comfort, habit. Its meaning changes constantly, which I find strangely fascinating.
